The Forest Animals Prepare for Saint Nicholas
It was a cold, clear evening in the forest. The animals had heard about a special tradition from the humans: Saint Nicholas would come to fill little shoes with gifts! The animals loved the idea and decided to try it themselves.
Pirrewitje stood in the middle of a circle of cheerful forest animals. “We all need something to put our treats in,” he said. “But who has shoes in the forest?”
Owl Wiebel hooted and showed an old wooden clog he had found in a tree hollow. “This can be my shoe!” he said proudly.
Squirrel Noortje had woven a tiny basket from pine needles. “I’ll use this—it looks like a shoe!” she said.
The rabbits brought over a large mushroom. “This will do just fine!” they giggled.
Fox Vlinster arrived with an empty acorn cap. “This is my shoe,” he said with a wide grin.
Pirrewitje picked his smallest gnome clog and lined it with moss to make it extra soft. “Perfect!” he said.
The animals placed their shoes in a circle around the campfire. “Now we need to sing a song,” said Owl. “That’s part of the tradition!”
Together, they sang a cheerful forest song:
“Saint Nicholas, come through the trees,
Bring us treats for our shoes, please!
With nuts, berries, straw, or bread,
We wait here by our fire spread.”
That night, everyone slept restlessly with excitement. When the sun rose, the animals ran to their shoes. To their delight, they found treats like hazelnuts, little berries, and even a few shiny stones.
“It worked!” cheered Squirrel Noortje.
Pirrewitje laughed. “Saint Nicholas didn’t forget us. Let’s share everything and make it a feast!”
And so, the forest animals celebrated a wonderful Saint Nicholas day, filled with treats, songs, and friendship.
