Little Pirrewit and the Darkness That Whispered Softly

🌙 Little Pirrewit and the Darkness That Whispered Softly

Once upon a time, there was a tiny little gnome.
His name was Pirrewit. Pirrewit lived inside a cozy tree, deep in the enchanted forest.

One evening, he climbed into his soft little bed. His blanket was warm and snuggly, tucked gently around his tummy. But then, it grew dark.

“Oh dear,” whispered Pirrewit. “Where has the light gone?“

He looked into the corner of his little room.
“Mommy? Are you there?“

Mother Gnome came to see him.
“Yes, sweetheart. I’m right nearby.“

“But Mommy, the darkness is so big!“

Mommy sat down beside his bed.
“Do you know what the darkness does?” she asked.

Pirrewit shook his head.

“The darkness helps the flowers fall asleep. And the little birds. Even the big, tall trees.”

“Really?” asked Pirrewit.

“Oh yes. Just listen.”

And together, they listened.
Rustle, rustle, went the leaves.
Squeak, squeak, went a sleepy little mouse.
And outside the window, a tiny star appeared.
“Hello, Pirrewit!” it seemed to twinkle.

Pirrewit smiled.
So I’m not all alone?”

“No, sweetheart. I’m close by. And your teddy bear is staying right here with you.”

Mommy kissed the tip of his little nose.
Pirrewit hugged his teddy bear tightly.

“Goodnight, trees,” he whispered.
“Goodnight, flowers.”
“Goodnight, little star.”

Then he gently closed his eyes.

And do you know what?
The darkness was still there.
But now it felt soft and peaceful.
As though the whole enchanted forest was falling asleep with him.

Sleep tight, little Pirrewit.

And his teddy bear?
He was already fast asleep.

Shhhhh… 🌟

A little note for the storyteller

Read the final sentences very slowly, in a soft and soothing voice. Let your little listener hold their favourite teddy bear or cuddly toy while saying goodnight to the trees, the flowers, and the stars, just like Pirrewit.

Repeating this little ritual at bedtime can help a child feel safe, comforted, and familiar with the darkness.

The idea is not to make the darkness disappear, but to gently help the child discover that the dark can be a peaceful place, too.

And the illustration of little Pirrewit, tucked safely beneath his blanket with his teddy bear and the twinkling star outside his window, belongs just as beautifully to this version of the story.

Nige, Nite… sleep well!
