Their Great Importance to Nature

Once upon a time, there was a gnome named Pirrewitje. He lived in a cozy hollow tree in the middle of the forest. It was a sunny morning and Pirrewitje was busy in his little garden when he suddenly heard some sad sounds.

Pirrewitje pricked up his ears and followed the sound until he found a group of snails crying by a puddle. “What’s the matter, dear snails?” Pirrewitje asked kindly.

One of the snails, who introduced himself as Sliertje, sniffled and said, “Our shells are gone! We feel so exposed and unprotected without our beautiful shells.”

Pirrewitje nodded understandingly and thought deeply. He knew that snails were very important to the forest because they helped clean up the leaves and kept the soil fertile. “Don’t worry, I will help you,” promised Pirrewitje.

Together with the snails, Pirrewitje went looking for materials to make new shells. They found beautiful pieces of bark, shiny stones, and soft leaves. Pirrewitje used his little gnome hands to build the most beautiful shells. While he was busy, he told the snails about their important role in nature.

You make sure the forest is clean and healthy. You eat dead leaves and make the soil rich and nutritious. Without you, the plants wouldn’t grow as well,” Pirrewitje explained.

The snails listened attentively and began to feel better. After a while, Pirrewitje had made a beautiful new shell for each snail. The snails were overjoyed and slithered into their new homes. “Thank you, Pirrewitje!” they called in unison.

Pirrewitje smiled broadly. “You’re welcome, friends. Never forget how important you are to the forest.”

With their new shells, the snails slithered away happily, ready to continue their work in the forest. And Pirrewitje? He went back to his garden, happy to have done another good deed.
